Minutes of the meeting held at 1 o’clock on Wednesday March 7th 2007 in Room 146, Brigantia.

    1. Welcome and Apologies
Paul welcomed those present: Cossie Rasana, David Eagar, Serene Dalati, Judith Kaufmann. Apologies were received from Jayne Neal, Karen and Owain Traws.

    2. Acceptance of minutes and matters arising
No minutes of the previous meeting were available.

    3. Co-opting another ordinary member to the committee
Although she was not at the meeting, it was decided to co-opt Karen as an ordinary member of the committee. Judith to inform her by e-mail.

    4. Discussion of social club activities
There was a discussion on whether to carry on with the Badminton as arranged last term. Serene had discussed with the Academic Registrar the possibility of funding and booking courts, and had come to an agreement with him. Serene would undertake to advertise the sports once more.

David raised the issue of advertising and contact with students more generally. He asked how to get hold of lists of all postgraduate students. Judith to make enquiries. It was suggested that other groups might be contacted, such as the International Office and those responsible for mature students, in order to avoid duplication of social events.

    5. Election of students to the Social Club
    The following officers were elected:
David Eagar: Secretary of the Social Club
Serene Dalati: Treasurer of the Social Club

    6. Maintenance of the RSF’s Website and Blog
There was a discussion on the need to maintain and update the RSF Blog to advertise social events as well. It was felt that someone needed to be responsible for it. Niklas had been mentioned as someone who would be able to do that, and David offered to contact Niklas to ask whether he would be willing to be responsible for the blog.

    7. Reports from meetings attended
Cossie reported about a meeting of the Graduate Skills Group where there was a discussion on a training programme for graduates and various ways of networking between colleges and schools.

    8. Financial matters
Serene reported on her meeting with the Academic Registrar. They had agreed on the basic principles. For instance, booking the Badminton playing courts would be done via the registry, since it was not possible to obtain a cost code. The money would be taken out of the RSF allowance. A Badminton court costs £8 for two hours. The same would be true of office needs if ever required.

    9. Survey of postgraduate students
Paul was anxious to hold another survey amongst postgraduate students, on the same pattern as the one held three years ago. He wanted to have a look at the old one before the next meeting and think about what steps to take. The first time, over 400 questionnaires were sent out to students, and about 70 were received back.

    10. RSF Office
Paul raised the question whether the RSF needed an office. But it was decided that there was no need for one at the present time. The secretary would be doing most of the work and Judith did not feel that she needed a separate room to do this.

    11. Any other business
RSF conference: It was agreed to set a date for the next conference before long so that there would be plenty of time to organise it since the first conference was such a success. The date would be after the next examinations, sometime in February or March 2008.

    12. Date of the next meeting
A decision was made to meet on April 11th between 1 and 2 o’clock. A suggestion was made that meetings could be held at lunchtime from now on to attract more people who could bring their sandwiches with them. It was agreed to keep to the same time for the time being and to find out whether the end of the afternoon would be a more convenient time for members to be present.

The next meeting will be held on April 11th 2007 at 1 o’clock in Room 333 Brigantia.
